Mold and Musty

Probably the worst experience I have ever had at a hotel, Moldy and musty smell permeated the rooms and was given a room the first night with no windows! No one cared that the hotel smelled so bad nor did anyone follow up after I made a complaint via the front desk. I checked out early and went elsewhere.

Great historic grand old hotel. See what Singapore was like in the period prior to the World Wars. Staff was great, especially doorman, Jin, who was helpful and informative. The reason for the negative review around the property is due to a huge construction project going on along side the property currently.

Understaffed at check in - one clerk, three parties ahead of me, 26 min wait. Tried to phone for room service the evening I arrived, no one picked up dialing various numbers. Also the layout of ground floor is inconvenient - nice to have a lobby where you can have an informal chat w someone or even get the computer out and do some work - instead they have decorative antique chairs marked “do not sit” in every available space, apart from the restaurant which was closed it being later evening. Also a housekeeping cart permanently parked outside my room. On the positive side, breakfast was spectacular, the room was clean & comfortable though small, and it was good value for money.

Want to stay for good

Amazing hotel - so historic - in fantastic condition with modern yet classic decor Also I wanted a quick breakfast - I got coffee and scrambled eggs on toast in about 90 seconds. The team took care of my bags all day allowing me to sight-see on my last day and then offered me showers to change before going to the airport

Acceptable hotel, but not a 5 stars

Acceptable but definitely below average. Doesn’t qualify for 5 stars, 4 max. Very small rooms, extremely old with some broken items, doors, showers, light switches. No room service past 9pm (what’s the point ?), utterly pricey add ons (SGD 16 for nuts). Beds not comfortable.

Could do better

The Maxwell is a well placed hotel for travellers passing through on short trips. It’s unfortunate that the reception staff are ill informed about advance requests and therefore they are ignored. We asked them n booking for adjoining rooms as we are travelling with an elderly parent. At reception we were allocated rooms on different floors and told that these were the only rooms available for our 3 night stay. I was also told that I hadn’t booked breakfast or entitled to the Club Lounge, they would confirm in the morning that we do have that in our booking, but only once I produced the confirmation. The worst issue was that despite booking 2 double rooms, my elderly parent had been allocated a “small double for single occupancy”. Odd that it had a single bed in it! It also had a step down half a step inside the door and a very narrow route via the foot of the bed to get to the bathroom. Less than ideal for an 84 year old. On demanding a change a room was magically available on the ground floor, but without a proper window or view. Upsides are the exec lounge staff who can’t do enough, Rose should be teaching the front desk staff about service excellence.7

Pleasant older hotel with very nice staff. Construction underway next door currently. Room was well appointed, but fairly small and dark-----both because outside light limited by nearby scaffold with canvas to shield, and because light bulbs were dim.

This is a four star hotel in fitout and service not five star. Some facilities like the pool area are tired and not maintained. But the biggest issue is there is serious construction happening right next to the building so you have very loud noise all day and your windows are covered over so you have no natural light. This hotel isn’t discounted as it should be for this fact. Don’t book here until after the works are finished or discounts are offered.

Summary: Do not stay there. Go and see the ground floor deco for free and stay somewhere else. We took a risk staying there which failed. The Bad: 1. I would not have booked this hotel if I knew it was next to a huge building site with excavation going on. Noise most of the time. Very unpleasant. See my photos and compare to what the hotel shows in marketing photos. 2. We had a junior suite for ourselves and a regular room for our 14 and 18 year old kids. You cannot swing a cat in the rooms and bathrooms. 3. The hot water in the shower goes cold and the shower was filthy. See photo. 4. The outlook from the room was terrible and filthy. See photos. 5. The in built usb chargers next to the bed did not work. I did not bother reporting this to management as they are unresponsive. 6. When we first arrived, the safe in the room was missing. I went to reception to sort it out and the guy at reception was so rude and unapologetic. I asked for the duty manager to contact me but they never did. They did change our room with a really sour face. 7. The rooms are dark and dingy and uninviting after a hot Singapore day out. I thought we would wake up in a Saw movie. 8. My kids should not have been put in the room with inappropriate art on the wall. See photo. 9. A poorly managed and maintained establishment. The Good 1. The breakfast was good. 2. Coffee was good. 3. The staff were nice except for the guy who checked us in and the bar tender in the Polo Bar.

Really beautiful property and wonderful staff - had an issue with our 1st room (water pressure & temperature) and they immediately moved us to another room. Restaurant quite expensive but the one dinner we had was awesome as well as the service. Many restaurants nearby but mostly Korean so which is great but a bit limited. Chinatown nearby so not a big deal.
