What is the best of a hotel? Location, location, location, and customer service. Casa del Balam has a great location, friendly staff, easy access to public transportation and taxis, walkable location to historic centro, restaurants in walking distance, it is dated, but very clean.

This is a charming colonial hotel located in Centro/St Lucia. We also stayed here in 2023. The staff was responsive when we communicated via WhatsApp both before and during our stay. After 3 days of great pressure and hot water, there was no hot water for a day, but these things happen in old historic buildings. Bathroom updates are needed and housekeeping could be a bit more thorough, but we like the place for a few nights’ stay. Recommended.

The priming room was amazing with the balcony. The room was just as posted. The staff were very courteous. The restaurant in/attached to the hotel served excellent food and the staff in both spoke English. The cleaning staff was very thorough. The grounds were well kept. We would definitely stay here again.

The property is beautiful with a great courtyard. They had a guitar player in the mornings, which added to the ambiance. The pool is very nice and well-maintained, with many thoughtful touches throughout the hotel. Although it is an older hotel, it is impeccably cared for. The rooms and beds are comfortable, and the staff is super helpful. The location is perfect, situated on Calle 60 between La Plaza Grande and Parque Santa Lucia. Despite being on a busy street, we couldn't hear the city noise at night. Overall, it was a great experience.

Could be better

Minimum comfort in this very old hotel. The AC is noisy and not efficient at all. Wifi is only accessible in the lobby. Building needs maintenance. We also had a surprise regarding the laundry fees, they announced around 250 pesos, we had to pay 600 pesos (2.5 times more). Hot water was not available the first day. Curtains are not dark enough, so it wakes you up when the sun rises. Location is great though, right downtown Merida.

We did not have hoy water for 2 days, refrigerador do not work, they made the bed with the sheet at the top and blanket under. We had to wait a lot for them to bring a security box, the person did not know how to opérate it.

Casa del Balam is our “go to” hotel in Merida because of its perfect location near the outstanding Plaza Grande with all its restaurants, shops and cultural events. We love the historic charm of the hotel, its pool area and its restaurant.
