The Onyado is a good choice for families who want to do the onsen experience with their kids combined with a hotel stay. Capsule hotels are usually off limits for younger kids, while co-ed onsen places require swimwear and don't offer the full experience in a kid-friendly environment. If your kid wants to leave soon after arriving - no big deal as you can just return to your hotel room. The Onyado offers this experience but it is a big hotel - there are large numbers of guests arriving and leaving each day so the lobby can get busy and somewhat impersonal - although the staff are clearly doing their best. The onsen wasn't too busy on any of the times we visited, which was surprising given how many guests seem to be staying at the hotel. The hotel offers free use of massage chairs, pre-packaged ice cream bars in the evening and free pro-biotic drinks in the morning. We skipped breakfast as the extra charge seemed hefty compared to going outside. Wi-Fi internet was lackluster - I had to switch my phone back to LTE to get things moving and had to disconnect/reconnect on my laptop to get a stronger signal. Room size is pretty decent and nicely done but we could hear kids in our neighbors rooms or above/below us. The kids had a great time, but out personal preference I think I would choose a smaller hotel, if can I find one that also offers a true, even basic onsen experience.

Best hotel stay during our 2 weeks trip around Japan. We love its unique vibe and cultural experiences there. The amenities were our favorite like Hot Springs after a long day walking. My kids favorite were the late night free ramen meal and ice cream! Would stay here again if we ever come back.

Listen, I have no issue with onsen having a tattoo policy — around 50% of onsen these days allow tattoos. My issue is that their no-tattoo policy is not on their hotels.com listing, and the rather rude manner in which the information is communicated to customers via an illustration conflating people with tattoos and drunks. Oh, and of course, the “bathing tax” which we had to pay despite not being allowed to use the facilities. Luckily, we were able to find numerous nice, clean, and reasonably-priced onsen in Kyoto where we were welcomed. If your hotel has a policy that will make a good number of people feel unwelcome, it needs to be on your hotels.com listing, not buried on their own website.

We really enjoyed our 6-night stay at this onsen hotel. The location is excellent—just a short walk from both the train and bus stations, with plenty of restaurants, garden, temples nearby to explore. The only downside during our stay was that the hotel was quite crowded on some days. This led to a long wait for the massage chairs, which we ended up skipping. What made it less appealing was that the chairs didn’t appear to be cleaned between uses, which felt a bit unhygienic. Thankfully, using the massage chairs wasn’t a priority for us, so it didn’t affect our overall experience. We will definitely come back to this hotel for its convenience.

The hotel is immaculate well kept. The onsen is beautiful. The only problem is the rooms are the size of a cruise ship room. I've never seen rooms that small in Japan. We were quite surprised for the price. They were that tiny with a very little room to move around.
