Nice room but overpriced and rude staff
When we checked in, I was informed that I had to pay a £50 'preauthorisation' fee on top of what I'd already paid for the room. This was never mentioned on hotels.com when i booked and the property never contacted me to inform me of the charge. Luckily, i had no direct debits during my stay but i would advise other people to plan accordingly if youre choosing to stay. That evening, we decided to go to the hotel restaurant because it looked nice and they were advertising a wine and salmon deal. Portions were so ridiculously small, we had to order takeaway afterwards because we were still hungry. With added service charge, the bill came to nearly 50 pounds for both of us despite our only food consisting of the salmon and a small glass of wine. When we checked out the next day, I asked again about the £50 that had been taken from my account. It was a different receptionist on and she was very rude when I raised concern about the money. When i asked when id get it back, she said 'nothing's instant' and that the fact I hadn't been informed about it was my fault for not calling ahead. The irony that my money had instantly been taken at check-in was not lost on me. Every staff member we interacted with during our stay apart from the initial receptionist had a very curt and flippant attitude as if our money was worth less than their usual clientele. Unless youve got a silver spoon up your backside, I wouldn't recommend this place.

The Malmaison was a lovely little get away for a night as a couple, nothing bad to say really other than sad no upgrade options were available when we checked in and the light in the room was broken so was quite dark. Plus side cheeky little Ferrero Rocher left for us and robes which was a nice touch

River View Room
We stayed for a night for my partners 30th birthday, he used to live in Dundee and we had our first date in Dundee so it was a nice way to walk down memory lane. On arrival the lady at the desk was pleasant and shared we had a room with a river view which was a nice little surprise since we hadn’t paid for a view. The room was mostly clean but the throw on the bed had an unusual stain on it (underside) we just threw that off the bed as we were only there 1 night. Chromecast on the tv didn’t work but not a massive issue as we weren’t staying to watch tv. Durin our sleep an alarm went off it was particularly loud, I was startled and awoke asking my partner what it was (not going to lie we were drunk) he thought it was my phones alarm so we went back to sleep after I turned my phone off! It went off again and after a third time we tried to phone reception from the room phone which didn’t work. I ended up phoning the hotel after googling their number to be told someone had brought in a smoke machine to their event and they were trying to ventilate the space and reset the alarm. Only concern I have is the alarm wasn’t continuous - not sure if they’re meant to be if it’s just smoke - whereas at home my smoke alarm would be constantly going. Some areas of the hotel had evidence of general wear and tear but not anything significant. Other than this it was a nice break but we have stayed in better Malmaison hotels.

Location was excellent, character and uniqueness of the building…clean and comfortable… However the fire alarm went off three times and with a child that was so bad, trying to get down the stairs through drunken people was really not acceptable! Or enjoyable at 12pm the language was not impressive
