I arrived before the 4:00 PM check-in time and asked if the room happened to be available. The clerk told me there was an additional fee of $10.00 for each hour before the official check-in time. There was no mention of this on the hotels.com website under "Fees & Services." So even though the room was ready, the clerk insisted on an additional payment. He offered "as a courtesy" to discount the charges to a flat rate of $20.00. I have never encountered a hotel that would do such a thing and, of course, I could not change to a new hotel because at that point, the reservation was non-refundable. While the hotel was largely rundown (although improvements seemed to be in the works), it was still visibly branded as "Clarion" even though the current ownership apparently has nothing to do with Clarion. It felt like a huge rip-off and made me worried that their business practices might include "inventing" some damages or charges to add to my bill after I left. I will not be any richer or any poorer by $20.00; however, if this hotel is so desperate that it needs to scrounge a few extra bucks in such a questionable way from its guests, then may God bless them.
