SUPER recommend staying here for a cheap option in Chicago! As a solo female traveler I stayed in the single room w/attached half-bath. It was clean and quiet and I felt totally safe. There's even free breakfast here! It is about a 12-min walk from the Fullerton station (Red, Brown, and Purple lines), which is a bit far out of the city center, but the location is more than worth it for the price.
Cool idea, but a total fail. First off, I didn’t expect a fancy room or a long list of amenities. We booked a private room with private bath. So with that said, here are the list of fails as they come to my mind:
*No wash rags offered. I was told by the front desk that most people don’t use rags and they use their hands. What?
*Radiator in room worked two nights out of the three that we stayed. It was quite cold the one night that we had no heat.
*Room was dirty and dismal. Hardly any lighting so I made the most of the daylight with the blind open.
*Lots of noise in the hallways at night. Doors slamming, laughing, radiator made all sort of noises. Could hear the annoying beeping of the elevator every time someone entered or exited. Downloaded a white noise app on my phone to try and drown out the sounds. I’m all about a good time, but wouldn’t mind some peace and semi quiet after 11pm.
*Breakfast was bare minimum. The toast machine was broke and anything you put in it fell out the back end onto the countertop. I wasn’t the only guest frustrated with this.
*Towel rack in bathroom was broken.
*Water collected at the bottom of shower so you were standing in your own dirty water by showers end.
*Vending machine would not work when I went to purchase a bottled water. When I asked the front desk employee if he could unlock the machine so I could get a water he gave me a confused look and said that I could get water from the tap in the kitchen.
Love this hostel! My teenage son and I stay here frequently. We’ve been coming here since he was in elementary school. Safe and lovely neighborhood. Staff is always super friendly and welcoming. Common areas, rooms, and shared bathrooms are always clean. Good breakfast included with your stay.
We will come back time and time again!!
The place was cute and nice with a very friendly staff. The bunk bed was a bit creaky and I wouldn't recommend the top bed (of the bunk bed) for a heavier person. They provide clock room services which is great!
It was good, we stayed in a private suite and we had our own bathroom, a bed and a bunk bed. there was a large closet space, no tv. It was clean and bed were comfy
Good location for a good price. Room was clean, friendly staff. Parking can be a bit hard to find around the property but there is a parking garage a couple blocks away that doesn’t seem to get too full. Would stay again
Honestly, this is the best deal in town. Awesome area with plenty of food and nightlife and shopping within easy walking distance. A few blocks from the red/brown/purple lines. Value cannot be beat. It’s a great atmosphere! We got a premium room so we had our own bath/shower. To know, they provided towels but thankfully I had a couple washcloths in my bag. There’s no tv in the room, which I liked. No frills but definitely enough. *I cannot, so far, speak to the dormitory spaces, but the price is great!
Thank you Chicago Getaway Hostel for a wonderful stay. I stayed here for approximately 11 days over two bookings and each time the staff were fantastic. I stayed in a one bedroom half bathroom which was great for a single older female traveller. The showers were sufficient and at most times available without waiting. The breakfast was included and was adequate for a hostel, cereal, toast, juice, coffee or tea and on some days muffins, yogurt or fresh fruit. There is a full kitchen and large dining area. I can't comment on parking but the public transport wasn't too far if you are able to walk a few blocks. The best part is the location, north side of the river surrounded by eateries and bars. I found it was quiet and safe. I would definitely recommend this place if you want to save on accommodation costs in Chicago. Hostels are not for everyone however this one was great.

Liked: Cleanliness, staff & service
Location was great. Lots of food options with about a 10 minute walk or less. Staff was friendly and the option to leave luggage before check in or after check out was convenient. Beds could be more comfortable and the water pressure wasn’t great, but for the price it has just about everything you would need including complimentary breakfast (muffins, cereal, toast, waffles, juice & coffee).

The location is amazing. The hostel is fun.
The only thing I dislike is there is no AC in the rooms.
