Everything was wonderful, we really enjoyed our stay. Only complaint was that someone brought their dog and it trailed poop two separate times. Because of that the hallway smelled awful.

Lipstick on a Pig

With the exception of Sara, the staff couldn’t have been more unfriendly. We walked in to find urine in the toilet, a public hair on the seat and a filthy counter of what was supposed to be one of their best rooms. As we were winding down for the night, we couldn’t drown out the sound of the deep, loud hum of the building’s air conditioners. No amount of white noise could help. So we packed up and moved to a smaller room. That night, a methane/bbq smell emanated from the vent, the door crack was so wide, we had to stuff towels in the jams. We didn’t need cleaning services until after the second night, but we weren’t ready to leave when the cleaning person knocked at 11. We asked if they could come back in 15 and she looked at me like I had 4 heads. I asked if it was a problem and she rolled her eyes and entered the adjacent room. They never came back to clean the room, EVER. The trash had piled up and we were out of towels so called the last night for some and that woman was very kind. $35/day resort fee when the temps were sub-50 is also exorbitant. Overall not a great experience, but the price was cheaper than a lot of the nearby hotels so in this case the mantra is true…you get what you pay for. Although I would expect cleanliness at the very least. Maybe turn the focus a little more on cleaning the room than on making every square inch of the place Instagram worthy.

Good but a little odd

My stay at the Ryder was nice, though the building layout is a bit odd. First for the good; my room was clean and seemed to have been recently refurnished, the staff was friendly and the location is hard to beat. My room was located on the 4th floor, for which there is no good way to reach from the lobby. The front of the building is only three stories, so to reach the 4th floor one has to either walk all the way around the second of third floor or cut through the garage. I would suggest to hotel management to make improvements to the garage finishes, lighting and signage to make this rout more appealing.

Disliked: Amenities
There are probably better places to stay. On the day of our arrival, we called at 1:30 PM to see if our room was ready so we could check in early. The front desk confirmed that our room was ready but said it would be a $75 fee to check in before 3 PM (even though check-in is officially at 4 PM). I was so appalled by this policy that we considered canceling and booking elsewhere—I’ve never encountered such a charge at any other hotel. Otherwise, everything was just OK. The rooms lack mini bars, don’t offer bottled water, and don’t have hair dryers, which was disappointing. Overall, the experience didn’t feel worth the price, and I wouldn’t stay here again.

Check was a little bumpy. Was supposed to have two rooms as the reservation said but they only had one on their end. So we ended up on different floors on opposite ends of the hotel. And the coffee shops drinks are horrible. Short walks to really good coffee cafe’s. Do that. Breakfast was good though!

Mediocre hotel at best

Mediocre hotel, they charged an amenity fee for what amenities I have no idea, no coffee maker or kettle in the room or fridge for that matter, or complementary bottles of water. With that being said, they don’t even sell bottled water in the hotel. Then there’s some straw mat around the bed. There are little hair fibers that shed from it and get everywhere and cling to your clothes or anything that touches, for that matter. And finally, the website said there is a gym here, but that was NOT the case. The gym is located in another hotel that is a 5-min walk away, so there is ONE small hotel gym for TWO hotels. Good luck trying to get a decent workout in. Overall, the only good thing was the location.

Average accommodations. The best part of the hotel is merely the location otherwise very average hotel. Loud music plays all night at the bar downstairs. Desk staff not very helpful. Valet were the most competent staffers. Hotel charges a daily “amenities” fee for rentable bikes, the hotel restaurant and bar even if you use none of the “amenities.” Would stay somewhere else the next time we are in town.

Pros: Great location in Charleston within walking distances to all the major downtown spots. Updated hotel. Loved the coffee shop. Cons: not the cleanest room, beds were alright, but I’ve definitely had better in more affordable hotels. A lot of extra fees added on at the end of our stay, basically have to use valet if you have a car.
