I always love staying in The Steam Train Hotel when I’m going through Antonito in the San Luis Valley. It’s cute, and the staff are wonderful. It’s a great place to stay if you’re going to ride the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad. And the stay includes a continental breakfast with a little bit of everything for everyone. This was my second stay, and I’ll be back!

Very quaint and historic hotel. Unusual and enjoyable experience different from the usual cookie.cutter hotels. Paul is a great host.

Very depressed area. The hotel has not been updated. All of the furnishings are old including the beds and the bedspreads and pillows. Did not feel safe. Provided breakfast was poptarts and coffee. The owner states he has repeat visitors. Some people might like the very different atmosphere. You also have to climb steep stairs to get to the room which was hard on my husband with knee problems. The owner is very accommodating and tries hard. Appears he has done the best he can with what is available. The restaurant across the street also has not been updated in a very long time. The entire experience was like stepping back in time to an old Clint Eastwood western.

This hotel is the in the worst maintenance of any hotel I have ever stayed in... literally held together with duck tape and twisty wire.

The room was like a suite and the owners helped with local sites, restaurants and carrying our luggage. They were organized and placed antques on the hallway making the rooms feel homey.

1 of 2 air conditioners did not work. Toilet paper holder allowed paper to fall to floor. 20 stairs might be a problem for some people.

The heat was turned on and we could not control the temp. We roasted during the night. One window was cracked or it would have been unbearable. Also pillows were flat and could only get a few english TV stations.

A wonderful and unique place to stay
This wonderful hotel is unique and historic. Built in 1911 the second floor was converted to a hotel. To appreciate its charm you should understand there won’t be an elevator and rooms will vary in size and layout. There won’t be a lobby but there is a door off the side street with a number to call. Don’t worry, they are quick to come and incredibly friendly and eager to accommodate. The bed was very comfortable and at the end of the hall is a game room with a pool table. This is where you can get breakfast at anytime. Again, this is a historic building so don’t expect the breakfast buffet found in chain hotels. Antiques fill the decor with charm in the hall and rooms. Across the street are two Mexican restaurants that offer affordable and delicious meals. You will be only a block away from the house where Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was filmed and there’s a fantastic excursion train that leaves from town. I will be back for a longer stay next time.

Probably the best you’ll find this far out
The owners here are very kind and helpful, the place itself is very charming. Temperature wise it gets pretty uncomfortable and muggy. I did find trash (an empty water bottle) under the bed from a previous stay - just feels like something you’d notice if housekeeping actually looked under there when cleaning between stays. Also very obvious black moldy substance inside the mini-fridge in room 6 that’s clearly been there a while.
